The elevation
Deep red, grey, and fins of white.
Two linked wings with curved parapet caps over the entrance towers. The hotel was tan with green trim when we started. The towers are now deep red with tall white pilaster fins running five storeys to the cornice, and the long guest room wing is pale grey with white banding — so the building reads as a marker on the street rather than one flat mass.
The fins are the difficult part. Each one is a straight vertical line five storeys long against a dark field, so every edge was set out and cut by hand from the basket — a wander of a few millimetres reads from across the street. The work ran off boom lifts on a live downtown block, with cones and a signed lane closure moved elevation by elevation while the hotel stayed open.
